The brand appeared in 1936 and established a new industry standard by introducing several innovations. Viceroy was the first to produce cellulose acetate filter. Besides, it were the first cork-tipped filter cigs in the world. Later this company came into possession of British American Tobacco, an international tobacco group with brands sold in 180 markets around the world. In 2004 there was a merger with Reynolds American Inc.
The name of the brand is derived from the French word "roi", and means the king. A viceroy was a representative of the monarch who governed a country as his substitute.
In 1953, Viceroy Filter Kings were introduced. In 1990, Viceroy Box Kings and Lights Box Kings were introduced on the U.S. market, followed by Viceroy Ultra Lights Kings and Ultra Lights 100's in 1992 and New Viceroy 100's box styles, and Viceroy Menthol in 2000.
In the 1970s Viceroy sponsored USAC auto racing.
